1–Louisiana Fire Museum

The Louisiana State Fire Museum was built in 1859 by the David Crockett Fire Company No.1. Founded in 1841, it is believed to be the oldest continuously active volunteer fire company in the U. S. It is also the home of the Louisiana State Fireman Association that was organized in 1906.

Centered in the museum is its 1876 Gould Steam Fire Pumper, the first object in Louisiana to be registered on the National Register. It was purchased for $3,500, one of only 73 steamers ever made and is the only one left in the U. S. Light enough to be pulled by hand, it was horse drawn. The firemen did not have enough money to purchase nor feed a horse, so the baker, Gegenheimer generously loaned out his horse. Every time the fire bell rang, “Bill” bayed loudly with excitement!

The downstairs of the fire station has displays of memorabilia and firefighting equipment. The second floor of the station was used for meetings and social events until the early 1960s.
