On Feb.15, 1858 three lots were purchased on the corner of 10th and Lafayette Streets were bought by Gretna Hook & Ladder Company No. 1 for the purpose of a firemen’s public burial ground with more property purchased over the years. This site was considered the end of town. Over time lots were sold to individuals beyond the firemen.
Tombs in the cemetery range from very modest to much more ornate sites finished with granite or marble. The cemetery is operated by the City of Gretna. Gretna Historical Society believes that the history of the people interred there must live on. The annual Hook & Ladder Cemetery Tour celebrates those citizens and contributes toward the upkeep of the cemetery.
