Saturday, October 18th, 2014 - Our 2nd Annual Hook & Ladder Cemetery Tour

Mark this date on your calendars and come hear about the history of many Gretna residents who helped shape this great city. More details to follow
 

August 26th, 2014 - Tourism summit hosted by the Lt Governor of Louisiana.

The City of Gretna will be welcoming delegates from the 2014 Tourism Summit. They will be spending the afternoon on Tuesday, August 26 touring the City of Gretna. Their tour includes visiting the Gretna City Hall, the Gretna Historical Society Museum Complex, the St. Joseph Church & Gardens, and the German-American Culture Center. All GHS members are encouraged to be at our complex on the afternoon of August 26 to welcome these delegates. We want to promote our museums to this group of tourism directors who will be visiting us from around the country and world.
 

Thursday, August 14th, 2014 - Membership Meeting and Wine Social - 7 PM

Annual dues are $15 per person. Please contact Wanda Markase or Judy LeBlanc if you know someone that might want to join so an invitation can be mailed. Invites will go out on July 14th.

Thursday, June 12, 2014 - GHS/JHS joint June Meeting - 7 PM

This is a reminder of the joint GHS/JHS general membership meeting on Thursday at 7 p.m. at the GHS White House, 209 Lafayette St. We will commemorate the 130th anniversary of Gretna as the seat of government for Jefferson Parish. Elizabeth has ordered some nice refreshments from A&W caterers to serve at our meeting.

Thursday, May 8, 2014 - GHS Crawfish Boil - 6 PM

We will be suspending our normal business meeting on May 8th, and we will be hosting our annual crawfish boil. The cost for this event is $17 per person and includes a nice portion of boiled crawfish, potatoes, corn, sausage, and other boiled vegetables. Drinks are included. 

Donations of desserts for the dessert table would be greatly appreciated. 

This event will start at 6 PM. In order for us to purchase the correct amount of boiled crawfish portions, we will be selling pre-sold tickets up to Sunday, May 4. Call Elizabeth Schwarz at 361-1695 to reserve your ticket. We can not guarantee that we will have any extra crawfish to sell on the day of our event.
 

2014 GHS Annual Spring Tour of Homes

Thanks to all who participated in the April 27, 2014 Annual Spring Tour of Homes. Over 200 Friends visited the seven homes, the museums, the church and the business that we listed on this year’s tour. Special thanks to Stephanie Dieterich, our Chairlady.
 

GHS Events For The Weekend of April 26th and 27th!

Saturday, April 26th: Wreath Laying Ceremony
The Gretna Historical Society is hosting a Wreath Laying Ceremony on Saturday, April 26th at the grave site (Newton and 10th Street) of Louis Oscar Fried. Today marks the 100 year anniversary on when he lost his life serving his country.

We have a nice program planned, so please try to attend and be part of this historical event.

Following the ceremony, we are hosting a reception at the GHS Museum complex.

Sunday, April 27th: GHS Spring Tour of Homes
Be sure to come out for the GHS Spring Tour of Homes! The tour starts at the GHS Museum Complext at 209 Lafayette St in Gretna! The tour runs from 1 to 5 pm. Come out and enjoy seven amazing homes, the New Hope Baptist Church and the GHS Museum Complex!
 

GHS Spring Tour of Homes is only a few weeks away!

The Gretna Historical Society Spring Tour of Homes will be held on Sunday, April 27 from 1 to 5 p.m. The tour starts at the GHS Museum Complex at 209 Lafayette St. and cost $12 per person. You will receive a tour brochure with map, a wrist band and get to enjoy the historical treats that the Complex has to offer.

Seven beautiful homes and the New Hope Baptist Church, founded in 1863 and located at 434 Seventh St. will be open for the tour.

You can visit The White House, Gretna Green Blacksmith Shop, Kitty Strehle House, Ignatius Strehle House and the Louisiana State Fire Museum at the Complex.

As a part of the tour, also open for your enjoyment are the German-American Cultural Center, 519 Huey P. Long Ave. and the Southern-Pacific Train Depot, Huey P. Long Commons at Fourth Street.

Huey P's Pizzeria, located in a historic building at 139 Huey P. Long Ave. will give a free tea or soft drink with a purchased meal when you show your tour wrist band.

April Membership Meeting

This Month's meeting will at 7:00pm on Thursday, April 10, 2014 at the GHS Museum Complex, 209 Lafayette Street, Gretna LA 70053. We will have Sevilla Finley as our guest speaker.


GHS Annual Spring Tour of Homes

Tickets are $12 per person and can be purchased at the GHS Museum complex on the day of the tour. Tell your friends and neighbors about this wonderful event. This year we have seven homes and the New Hope Baptist Church open for the tour. The tour starts at the GHS Museum Complex.

We need volunteers to help on the day of the tour. Please call Paul Coles at 304-6868 to sign up to volunteer.
